August 22, 2019 – The chum return is over and will be one of the lowest returns we have seen in years.  We are waiting for updated numbers from ADF&G before we can start any analyze of the return.  No samples were taken this week with such low catch numbers.  Checkout the 2019 harvest season graphs for more detail on the chum return.  

Cost recovery at Amalga Harbor started on the 25th of June and cost recovery in Gastineau Channel started on July 6th. Fishing was very slow at both sites and we are done with cost recovery for the season.  Total harvest to date is just over 3.0 million pounds and well below the goal of 6 million pounds.

The coho return to Gastineau Channel has started to pick up this last week for the Juneau sports fleet. 

Chum eggtake started at Macaulay Salmon Hatchery on 7/22 and we have completed the eggtake with 135 million eggs in the hatchery.  We asked NSRAA for help in getting our goal with eggs from Hidden Falls hatchery.  We have received 10.0 million eggs from Hidden Falls that helped us make our goal.  A big Thank You goes out to NSRAA for helping us out.

The Speel Lake weir has been installed as of July 16 and we have passed 4,427 sockeye to date.  This meets the lower bound of the escapement goal for the lake.  The outlet creek has been very low and very warm this season and it is surprising that the fish has moved so well into the lake.  On Sunday the 18th a windstorm blew down so large tree into the creek, we will be monitoring fish movement to see if they can get by the downed trees.

Cost recovery at Snettisham started on the 24th of July.  Total cost recovery harvest as of 8/21 is ~326,000 pounds.

Chum eggtake started at Macaulay Salmon Hatchery on 7/22 and we have collected 122 million eggs to date.  We asked NSRAA for help meet the goal with eggs from Hidden Falls hatchery.  We have received 5.8 million eggs so far from Hidden Falls and are hoping for another 4 plus million from them if the brood fish move into the ladder.  Our combine total eggs to date is 129 million eggs and we are hoping to get close to our 135 million goal.  A big Thank You goes out to NSRAA for helping us out. 

The Speel Lake weir has been installed as of July 16 and we have passed 2,934 sockeye to date.  The outlet creek is very low and very warm for the holding sockeye and we are hoping for the next few days to help the fish move into the lake.

Cost recovery at Snettisham started on the 24th of July.  Total cost recovery harvest as of 8/15 is ~300,000 pounds.

August 8, 2019 – The gillnet chum catch numbers are very low and near the end of the run.  The DIPAC chum return was very poor overall and well below forecast.  There were no samples taken this week.  Checkout the 2019 harvest season graphs for more detail on the returns.

August 1, 2019 – The gillnet chum catch numbers are well below forecast for both Lynn Canal and Taku Inlet through the seventh opener of the season.  Sample information from the 7/28 gillnet opener is as follows: Lynn Canal - average weight of 5.8 pounds and a sex ratio of 27% male and 73% female. The age comp was 0% - 6's, 8% - 5's, 88% - 4's and 4% - 3's. Taku Inlet – No samples were taken for SW31.   Checkout the 2019 harvest season graphs for more detail on the returns.

July 25, 2019 – The gillnet chum catches continue to be below expectation for both Taku and Lynn Canal through the sixth opener of the season.  There wasn’t a seine opening at Amalga due to the poor returns.  Sample information from the 7/21 gillnet opener is as follows: Lynn Canal - average weight of 6.9 pounds and a sex ratio of 40% male and 60% female. The age comp was 2% - 6's, 11% - 5's, 82% - 4's and 5% - 3's. Taku Inlet - average weight of 6.5 pounds and a sex ratio of 38% male and 63% female. July 18, 2019 – The gillnet chum catch numbers have improved this week for both Lynn Canal and Taku Inlet through the fifth opener of the season.  Sample information from the 7/14 gillnet opener is as follows: Lynn Canal - average weight of 7.3 pounds and a sex ratio of 49% male and 51% female. The age comp was 1% - 6's, 23% - 5's, 72% - 4's and 4% - 3's. Taku Inlet - average weight of 7.4 pounds and a sex ratio of 51% male and 49% female. July 11, 2019 – The gillnet chum catch numbers remain well below forecast for Taku Inlet and Lynn Canal for the fourth opener of the season.  There was no Amalga Harbor seine opening this past week and looks doubtful for the coming week. Cost recovery catch numbers need to pickup before Amalga will open for the seine fleet.  Sample information from the 7/7 gillnet opener is as follows: Lynn Canal - average weight of 7.4 pounds and a sex ratio of 59% male and 41% female. The age comp was 1% - 6's, 11% - 5's, 87% - 4's and 1% - 3's. Taku Inlet - average weight of 8.2 pounds and a sex ratio of 64% male and 36% female. The Speel Lake weir will be installed and fish tight as of July 16.  The water levels are very low making it hard to get up to the lake.

July 5, 2019 – The gillnet chum catch numbers remain well below forecast for Taku Inlet and Lynn Canal for the third opener of the season.  There was no Amalga Harbor seine opening this past week and looks doubtful for the coming week. Cost recovery catch numbers need to pickup before Amalga will open for the seine fleet.  Sample information from the 6/30 gillnet opener is as follows: Lynn Canal - average weight of 8.0 pounds and a sex ratio of 76% male and 24% female. The age comp was 0% - 6's, 10% - 5's, 90% - 4's and 0% - 3's. Taku Inlet - average weight of 8.8 pounds and a sex ratio of 69% male and 31% female. June 27, 2019 – Gillnet chum catch numbers were very low at both Lynn Canal and Taku Inlet through the second opener of the season.  Trolling at Homeshore has been up and down for the last 2 weeks with a better catch than the last few years.  Sample information from the 6/23 gillnet opener is as follows: Lynn Canal - average weight of 9.4 pounds and a sex ratio of 77% male and 23% female. The age comp was 3% - 6's, 30% - 5's, 67% - 4's and 0% - 3's. Taku Inlet - average weight of 10.4 pounds and a sex ratio of 71% male and 29% female. June 20, 2019 – Chum catch numbers in both Lynn Canal and Taku Inlet appear to be record low for the first opener of the season.  There are only a handfull trollers fishing on Homeshore and the catch to date is very low for chums.  Sample information (based on a very low samples) from the 6/16 gillnet opener is as follows: Lynn Canal - average weight of 10.0 pounds and a sex ratio of 88% male and 12% female. The age comp was 3% - 6's, 53% - 5's, 45% - 4's and 0% - 3's. Taku Inlet - average weight of 12.2 pounds and a sex ratio of 93% male and 7% female.
