August 30, 2018 – This is the last update for the season.

The chum run is over.  The total gillnet catch of DIPAC chums for Dist. 11 & 15 combined is ~1.5 million fish.  Checkout both the 2018 harvest season graphs and our in season run estimate 7/18/2018 for a revised look at the run for more detail on the chum return.

Cost recovery at Amalga Harbor will start on the 25th of June and cost recovery in Gastineau Channel started the earliest ever on June 22nd. The cost recovery is complete for the season with a total cost recovery harvest of 5.6 million pounds.

The coho return to Gastineau Channel has started to pick up this last week for the Juneau sports fleet. We are hoping to see a better return than last year.

Chum eggtake will start at Macaulay Salmon Hatchery on 7/21 and we have completed the eggtake with 135 million eggs in the incubators.  We also took 18 million eggs for NSRAA’s Hidden.

The Speel Lake weir has been installed as of July 16 and we have passed 4,041 sockeye to date.  The camp and weir will be pulled out on the 21st of September.

Cost recovery at Snettisham started on the 11th of July (This is the earliest harvest on record).  Total cost recovery harvest to date is 660,000 pounds.

August 23, 2018 – The chum run is over.  It appears the return was 80 to 90% of forecast with the 3-year olds well above forecast, the 4-year olds were well below forecast and the 5-year olds were just above forecast.  Checkout the 2018 harvest season graphs for more detail on the returns and the in season run estimate 7/18/2018 for a revised look at the return.

August 16, 2018 – The chum return is over.  A quick summary of the return was that we saw a very large return of 3 year olds and 5 year olds and a poor return of 4 year olds.   No samples were taken this week.  Checkout both the 2018 harvest season graphs and our in season run estimate 7/18/2018 for a revised look at the run for more detail on the chum return.

August 2, 2018 – The gillnet chum catch numbers are a little below forecast for both Lynn Canal and Taku Inlet through the seventh opener of the season.  Please see our “in season run estimate 7/18/2018” update.   Sample information from the 7/29 gillnet opener is as follows: Lynn Canal - average weight of 6.4 pounds and a sex ratio of 34% male and 66% female. The age comp was 1% - 6's, 24% - 5's, 20% - 4's and 54% - 3's. Taku Inlet – No samples were taken for SW31.   Checkout the 2018 harvest season graphs for more detail on the returns.

July 26, 2018 – The gillnet chum catch numbers are above forecast for Taku and below forecast Lynn Canal through the sixth opener of the season.  Please see our “in season run estimate 7/18/2018” update.  Sample information from the 7/22 gillnet opener is as follows: Lynn Canal - average weight of 7.3 pounds and a sex ratio of 44% male and 56% female. The age comp was 1% - 6's, 43% - 5's, 27% - 4's and 30% - 3's. Taku Inlet - average weight of 7.3 pounds and a sex ratio of 38% male and 63% female. July 19, 2018 – The gillnet chum catch numbers are falling below forecast for both Lynn Canal and Taku Inlet through the fifth opener of the season.  Please see our “in season run estimate 7/18/2018” update. Sample information from the 7/15 gillnet opener is as follows: Lynn Canal - average weight of 7.6 pounds and a sex ratio of 41% male and 59% female. The age comp was 0% - 6's, 31% - 5's, 40% - 4's and 29% - 3's. Taku Inlet - average weight of 8.3 pounds and a sex ratio of 41% male and 59% female. July 12, 2018 – The gillnet chum catch numbers are at or above forecast for both Lynn Canal and Taku Inlet through the fourth opener of the season.  Sample information from the 7/8 gillnet opener is as follows: Lynn Canal - average weight of 8.1 pounds and a sex ratio of 49% male and 51% female. The age comp was 2% - 6's, 41% - 5's, 42% - 4's and 15% - 3's. Taku Inlet - average weight of 8.6 pounds and a sex ratio of 45% male and 55% female. July 6, 2018 – The gillnet chum catch numbers are above forecast for Taku Inlet and Lynn Canal is only average at best through the third opener of the season.  The Amalga Harbor seine opening very slower than expected and a little confusing to the staff.  Sample information from the 7/1 gillnet opener is as follows: Lynn Canal - average weight of 8.5 pounds and a sex ratio of 54% male and 46% female. The age comp was 3% - 6's, 30% - 5's, 62% - 4's and 5% - 3's. Taku Inlet - average weight of 9.2 pounds and a sex ratio of 61% male and 39% female. June 28, 2018 – Gillnet chum catch numbers appear to be above forecast for both Lynn Canal and Taku Inlet through the second opener of the season.  There are only a handful trollers fishing on Homeshore and the catch to date is very low for chums.  Sample information from the 6/24 gillnet opener is as follows: Lynn Canal - average weight of 9.4 pounds and a sex ratio of 61% male and 39% female. The age comp was 3% - 6's, 55% - 5's, 40% - 4's and 2% - 3's. Taku Inlet - average weight of 9.9 pounds and a sex ratio of 60% male and 40% female. June 24, 2018 – Chum catch numbers appear to be at or above forecast for Lynn Canal and Taku Inlet after the first opener of the season.  There are only a handfull trollers fishing on Homeshore and the catch to date is very low for chums.  Sample information from the 6/17 gillnet opener is as follows: Lynn Canal - average weight of 9.4 pounds and a sex ratio of 68% male and 32% female. The age comp was 4% - 6's, 52% - 5's, 39% - 4's and 4% - 3's. Taku Inlet - average weight of 10.4 pounds and a sex ratio of 70% male and 30% female.
