2011 DIPAC Harvest Season Update

September 6 – Commercial catches of DIPAC chum salmon are over. Final numbers for both Lynn Canal and Taku Inlet were above forecast with over 1.6 million DIPAC chum harvested. The troll fleet harvested over 145,000 DIPAC chums from Homeshore and the seine fleet harvested over 175,000 in Districts 12 & 14. Cost recovery at Amalga Harbor and Gastineau Channel is complete. We harvested a total of ~11.4 million pounds.

Cost recovery at Snettisham Hatchery is complete. We harvested just over 108,000 pounds. All broostock has been collected and the eggtake should start by September 24th.

The Crescent Lake sonar weir was closed out on 8/29/2011. The Speel Lake weir will remain in operation until 9/20/2011 A total sockeye passed is 4,760 as of 9/5/2011.

The Macaulay Salmon Hatchery chum eggtake started 7/21/2011 and is complete with 125 million eggs in the incubators.

We have harvested ~108,000 pounds to date - (8/29/2011).

The Crescent Lake sonar weir is installed and operational 7/9/2011. We have had problems with moss moving downstream in the water column and being counted as downstream fish and we are also seeing a large amount of pink salmon going up and downstream. This is producing a negative total upstream number. To date the cumulative net upstream count is -1,525 as of 8/21/2011. The Speel Lake weir was installed and operational on 7/14/2011. A total sockeye passed is 4,728 as of 8/25/2011. Both sites still have high water after the recent rains.

We have had problems with moss moving downstream in the water column and being counted as downstream fish and we are also seeing a large amount of pink salmon going up and downstream. This is producing a negative total upstream number. To date the cumulative net upstream count is -1,570 as of 8/21/2011. The Speel Lake weir was installed and operational on 7/14/2011. A total sockeye passed is 4,727 as of 8/22/2011. Both sites have very high and muddy water after the recent rains. The Speel Lake trap is shutdown until the water level recedes.

A total sockeye passed is 3,254 as of 8/11/2011.

The latest sample information is an average weight of 6.1 pounds and a sex ratio of 41% male and 59% female. The age comp was 1% 3 year olds, 98% 4 year olds, 1% 5 year olds and 0% 6 year olds. We have harvested ~7.3 million pounds to date - (7/18/2011).

We will report numbers as soon as we can. The Speel Lake weir was installed and operational on 7/14/2011. No fish have been passed but fish are observed in the lower creek.

Sample information is as follows - Lynn Canal- average weight of 7.4 pounds and a sex ratio of 66% male and 34% female. The age comp was 1% - 3 year olds, 86% - 4 year olds, 13% - 5 year olds and 0% - 6 year old. Taku Inlet - average weight of 6.5 pounds and a sex ratio of 57% male and 43% female. The age comp was 0% 3 year olds, 80% 4 year olds, 20% 5 year olds and 0% 6 year olds. Cost recovery in Gastineau Channel has slowed also. The latest sample information is an average weight of 6.3 pounds and a sex ratio of 65% male and 35% female. The age comp was 0% 3 year olds, 93% 4 year olds, 7% 5 year olds and 0% 6 year olds. We have harvested ~5.4 million pounds to date - (7/14/2011).

The age comp was 1% - 6 year olds, 23% - 5 year olds, 76% - 4 year olds and 0% - 3 year old. Taku Inlet(this weeks sample)- average weight of 7.2 pounds and a sex ratio of 73% male and 27% female. The age comp was 0% 6 year olds, 20% 5 year olds, 80% 4 year olds and 0% 3 year olds. Cost recovery in Gastineau Channel is slow and steady but should be picking up this week. The latest sample information is an average weight of 7.1 pounds and a sex ratio of 83% male and 17% female. The age comp was 0% 6 year olds, 13% 5 year olds, 87% 4 year olds and 0% 3 year olds. We have harvested ~3.0 million pounds to date - (7/7/2011).

July 8 – Catch numbers continue to be good in Lynn Canal with a large fleet fishing. Chum fishing in Taku Inlet is slowly picking up. The daily catches by the troll fleet on Homeshore have dropped off with a majority of the troll fleet leaving for Neets Bay chums or the summer Chinook fishery. Sample information from this weeks opener is as follows - Lynn Canal - average weight of 7.6 pounds and a sex ratio of 71% male and 29% female. The age comp was 1% - 6 year olds, 23% - 5 year olds, 76% - 4 year olds and 0% - 3 year old. Taku Inlet - average weight of 8.5 pounds and a sex ratio of 85% male and 15% female. The age comp was 0% 6 year olds, 20% 5 year olds, 80% 4 year olds and 1% 3 year olds. Cost recovery in Gastineau Channel is off to a good start and is looking fishy. The latest sample information is an average weight of 7.1 pounds and a sex ratio of 83% male and 17% female. The age comp was 0% 6 year olds, 13% 5 year olds, 87% 4 year olds and 0% 3 year olds. We have harvested ~3.0 million pounds to date - (7/7/2011).

July 5 – Catch numbers continue to be good in Lynn Canal with a large fleet fishing. Chum fishing in Taku is starting to pick up. The daily catches by the troll fleet on Homeshore are starting to drop off with the troll fleet leaving for Neets Bay chums or the summer Chinook fishery. Sample information from Sunday's opener is as follows - Lynn Canal average weight of 7.6 pounds and a sex ratio of 71% male and 29% female. The age comp was 1% - 6 year olds, 23% - 5 year olds, 76% - 4 year olds and 0% - 3 year old. Taku Inlet average weight of 7.1 pounds and a sex ratio of 83% male and 17% female. The age comp was 0% - 6 year olds, 31% - 5 year olds, 69% - 4 year olds and 0% - 3 year old. Homeshore Troll chums - average weight of 6.3 pounds and 94% DIPAC produced chums. Cost recovery is off to a good start at Amalga Harbor but the fish are on the small side. The latest sample information is an average weight of 7.2 pounds and a sex ratio of 56% male and 44% female. The age comp was 0% 6 year olds, 20% 5 year olds, 80% 4 year olds and 1% 3 year olds. Cost recovery in Gastineau Channel started yesterday and is looking fishy. The latest sample information is an average weight of 7.1 pounds and a sex ratio of 83% male and 17% female. The age comp was 0% 6 year olds, 13% 5 year olds, 87% 4 year olds and 0% 3 year olds. We have harvested ~2.6 million pounds to date - (7/5/2011).

The age comp was 3% 6 year olds, 25% 5 year olds, 72% 4 year olds and 0% 3 year olds. No sample information taken for Taku Inlet this week.
