2010 DIPAC Harvest Season Update

September 3 – The DIPAC chum return is over for the season in both Lynn Canal and Taku Inlet (check out the (2010 harvest graphs).

Cost recovery harvests in Amalga Harbor and Gastineau Channel are complete. We harvested a total of 10.4 million pounds.

Cost recovery at Snettisham Hatchery is nearly over with the return well below expectations. The latest sample information shows an average weight of 5.7 pounds and a sex ratio of 46% male and 54% female. The age comp was 52% 5 year olds, 48% 4 year olds. We have harvested ~195,000 pounds or ~38,000 fish to date - (8/31/2010).

The Crescent Lake sonar weir was installed and operational on 7/11/2010. They have counted a total of 3,047 fish into the lake. The Speel Lake weir was installed and fish tight on 7/13/2010. As of this morning they have passed 5,362 sockeye into the lake.

The Macaulay Salmon Hatchery chum eggtake is complete with 123 million eggs taken.

Cost recovery at Snettisham Hatchery started on 7/28/2010 and run entry is well below expectations. The latest sample information shows an average weight of 5.7 pounds and a sex ratio of 46% male and 54% female. The age comp was 52% 5 year olds, 48% 4 year olds. We have harvested ~190,000 pounds or ~37,000 fish to date - (8/25/2010).

The Crescent Lake sonar weir was installed and operational on 7/11/2010. They have counted a total of 2,835 fish into the lake. The Speel Lake weir was installed and fish tight on 7/13/2010. As of this morning they have passed 4,790 sockeye into the lake.

The age comp was 0% 6 year olds, 42% 5 year olds, 55% 4 year olds and 3% 3 year olds. Sample information for Taku Inlet last sample was an average weight of 7.1 pounds and a sex ratio of 42% male and 58% female. The age comp was 0% 6 year olds, 33% 5 year olds, 60% 4 year olds and 7% 3 year olds.

We have harvested ~161,000 pounds or ~32,000 fish to date - (8/19/2010).

The Crescent Lake sonar weir was installed and operational on 7/11/2010. They have counted a total of 2,454 fish into the lake. The Speel Lake weir was installed and fish tight on 7/13/2010. As of this morning they have passed 4,692 sockeye into the lake.

The age comp was 0% 6 year olds, 42% 5 year olds, 55% 4 year olds and 3% 3 year olds. Sample information for Taku Inlet last sample was an average weight of 7.1 pounds and a sex ratio of 42% male and 58% female. The age comp was 0% 6 year olds, 33% 5 year olds, 60% 4 year olds and 7% 3 year olds.

The Crescent Lake sonar weir was installed and operational on 7/11/2010. They have counted a total of 2,147 fish into the lake. The Speel Lake weir was installed and fish tight on 7/13/2010. As of this morning they have passed 3,494 sockeye into the lake.

The Macaulay Salmon Hatchery chum eggtake started 7/23/2010 and has collected 120 million eggs or is 98% complete to date.

The age comp was 0% 6 year olds, 42% 5 year olds, 55% 4 year olds and 3% 3 year olds. Sample information for Taku Inlet last sample was an average weight of 7.1 pounds and a sex ratio of 42% male and 58% female. The age comp was 0% 6 year olds, 33% 5 year olds, 60% 4 year olds and 7% 3 year olds.

The age comp was 21% 5 year olds, 79% 4 year olds. We have harvested ~54,000 pounds to date - (8/12/2010).

The Crescent Lake sonar weir was installed and operational on 7/11/2010. They have counted a total of 2,003 fish into the lake. The Speel Lake weir was installed and fish tight on 7/13/2010. As of this morning they have passed 2,338 sockeye into the lake.

The Macaulay Salmon Hatchery chum eggtake started 7/23/2010 and has collected 114 million eggs or is 94% complete to date.

The last sample information for Lynn Canal shows an average weight of 7.7 pounds and a sex ratio of 42% male and 58% female. The age comp was 0% 6 year olds, 42% 5 year olds, 55% 4 year olds and 3% 3 year olds. Sample information for Taku Inlet last sample was an average weight of 7.1 pounds and a sex ratio of 42% male and 58% female. The age comp was 0% 6 year olds, 33% 5 year olds, 60% 4 year olds and 7% 3 year olds.

The age comp was 0% 6 year olds, 24% 5 year olds, 71% 4 year olds and 5% 3 year olds. Cost recovery in Gastineau Channel is nearly over with just a clean-up day left. The last sample information of an average weight of 7.0 pounds and a sex ratio of 62% male and 38% female. The age comp was 0% 6 year olds, 39% 5 year olds, 41% 4 year olds and 20% 3 year olds. We have harvested ~10.3 million pounds to date - (8/2/2010).

Cost recovery at Snettisham Hatchery started on 7/28/2010 with slow catch rates again this year. The latest sample information of an average weight of 5.3 pounds and a sex ratio of 60% male and 40% female. The age comp was 46% 5 year olds, 54% 4 year olds. We have harvested ~40,000 pounds to date - (8/2/2010).

The Crescent Lake sonar weir installed and operational on 7/11/2010. They have counted a total of 1,283 fish into the lake. The Speel Lake weir was installed and fish tight on 7/13/2010. As of this morning they have passed 1,555 sockeye into the lake.

July 31 – Commercial catches of chums have slowing down in both Lynn Canal and Taku Inlet (check out the 2010 harvest graphs). The latest Sample information for Lynn Canal shows an average weight of 7.7 pounds and a sex ratio of 42% male and 58% female. The age comp was 0% 6 year olds, 42% 5 year olds, 55% 4 year olds and 3% 3 year olds. Sample information for Taku Inlet shows an average weight of 7.1 pounds and a sex ratio of 42% male and 58% female. The age comp was 0% 6 year olds, 33% 5 year olds, 60% 4 year olds and 7% 3 year olds.

Cost recovery at Amalga Harbor is nearly over with just a couple of cleanup days left. The last sample information was an average weight of 7.3 pounds and a sex ratio of 29% male and 71% female. The age comp was 0% 6 year olds, 26% 5 year olds, 67% 4 year olds and 7% 3 year olds. Cost recovery in Gastineau Channel is on hold to insure broodstovck for the hatchery. The last sample information of an average weight of 7.0 pounds and a sex ratio of 62% male and 38% female. The age comp was 0% 6 year olds, 39% 5 year olds, 41% 4 year olds and 20% 3 year olds. We have harvested ~10.2 million pounds to date - (7/29/2010).

Cost recovery at Snettisham Hatchery started on 7/28/2010 with a better show of fish than the last few years. The latest sample information of an average weight of 5.1 pounds and a sex ratio of 79% male and 21% female. The age comp was 25% 5 year olds, 75% 4 year olds. We have harvested ~27,000 pounds to date - (7/31/2010).

The Crescent Lake sonar weir installed and operational on 7/11/2010. They have counted a total of 1,025 fish into the lake. The Speel Lake weir was installed and fish tight on 7/13/2010. As of this morning they have passed 594 sockeye into the lake.

Cost recovery in Gastineau Channel is still a little slow with the latest sample information of an average weight of 7.0 pounds and a sex ratio of 62% male and 38% female. The age comp was 0% 6 year olds, 39% 5 year olds, 41% 4 year olds and 20% 3 year olds. We have harvested ~10.0 million pounds to date - (7/26/2010).

The Crescent Lake sonar weir installed and operational on 7/11/2010. They have counted a total of 875 fish into the lake. The Speel Lake weir was installed and fish tight on 7/13/2010. As of this morning they have passed 375 sockeye into the lake.

July 23 – Commercial catches of chums are tracking well for the run to hit the mid-point forecast in both Lynn Canal and Taku Inlet for the fifth gillnet fishing period of the season(check out the 2010 harvest graphs). The latest Sample information from the fifth fishing period for Lynn Canal shows an average weight of 7.7 pounds and a sex ratio of 42% male and 58% female. The age comp was 0% 6 year olds, 42% 5 year olds, 55% 4 year olds and 3% 3 year olds. Sample information for Taku Inlet shows an average weight of 7.1 pounds and a sex ratio of 42% male and 58% female. The age comp was 0% 6 year olds, 33% 5 year olds, 60% 4 year olds and 7% 3 year olds. We will update the sample information later this week.

Cost recovery in Gastineau Channel is still a little slow with the latest sample information of an average weight of 7.0 pounds and a sex ratio of 62% male and 38% female. The age comp was 5% 6 year olds, 42% 5 year olds, 51% 4 year olds and 3% 3 year olds. We have harvested ~8.6 million pounds to date - (7/22/2010).

July 20 – Commercial catches of chums are tracking well for the run to hit the mid-point forecast in both Lynn Canal and Taku Inlet for the fifth gillnet fishing period of the season(check out the 2010 harvest graphs). The latest Sample information from the fourth fishing period for Lynn Canal shows an average weight of 7.2 pounds and a sex ratio of 52% male and 48% female. The age comp was 1% 6 year olds, 24% 5 year olds, 74% 4 year olds and 1% 3 year olds. Sample information for Taku Inlet shows an average weight of 7.6 pounds and a sex ratio of 56% male and 44% female. The age comp was 0% 6 year olds, 41% 5 year olds, 56% 4 year olds and 3% 3 year olds. We will update the sample information later this week.

The age comp was 0% 6 year olds, 28% 5 year olds, 69% 4 year olds and 3% 3 year olds. Cost recovery in Gastineau Channel is still a little slow with the latest sample information of an average weight of 7.3 pounds and a sex ratio of 62% male and 38% female. The age comp was 0% 6 year olds, 50% 5 year olds, 49% 4 year olds and 1% 3 year olds. We have harvested ~7.6 million pounds to date - (7/19/2010).

July 16 – Commercial catches of chums are tracking well for the run to hit forecast in both Lynn Canal and Taku Inlet for the fourth gillnet fishing period of the season(check out the 2010 harvest graphs). Sample information from the fourth fishing period for Lynn Canal shows an average weight of 7.2 pounds and a sex ratio of 52% male and 48% female. The age comp was 1% 6 year olds, 24% 5 year olds, 74% 4 year olds and 1% 3 year olds. Sample information for Taku Inlet shows an average weight of 7.6 pounds and a sex ratio of 56% male and 44% female. The age comp was 0% 6 year olds, 41% 5 year olds, 56% 4 year olds and 3% 3 year olds.

Cost recovery at Amalga Harbor appears to be tracking just above average. Sample information from yesterday was an average weight of 6.9 pounds and a sex ratio of 36% male and 64% female. The age comp was 0% 6 year olds, 29% 5 year olds, 66% 4 year olds and 5% 3 year olds. Cost recovery in Gastineau Channel is still a little slow with the latest sample information of an average weight of 7.1 pounds and a sex ratio of 47% male and 53% female. The age comp was 0% 6 year olds, 50% 5 year olds, 44% 4 year olds and 6% 3 year olds. We have harvested ~5.9 million pounds to date - (7/15/2010).

The Crescent Lake sonar weir installed and operational on 7/11/2010. They have counted a total of 171 fish into the lake. The Speel Lake weir was installed and fish tight on 7/13/2010. As of this morning there are no sign of any sockeye below the weir.

July 13 – Commercial catches of chums sound like they are starting off good in both Lynn Canal and Taku Inlet for the fourth gillnet fishing period of the season(check out the 2010 harvest graphs). Sample information from the fourth fishing period for Lynn Canal shows an average weight of 7.9 pounds and a sex ratio of 71% male and 29% female. The age comp was 0% 6 year olds, 43% 5 year olds, 55% 4 year olds and 2% 3 year olds. Sample information for Taku Inlet shows an average weight of 7.6 pounds and a sex ratio of 56% male and 44% female. The age comp was 0% 6 year olds, 41% 5 year olds, 56% 4 year olds and 3% 3 year olds.

Cost recovery at Amalga Harbor appears to be tracking just above average. Sample information from yesterday was an average weight of 7.5 pounds and a sex ratio of 51% male and 49% female. The age comp was 0% 6 year olds, 37% 5 year olds, 60% 4 year olds and 3% 3 year olds. Cost recovery in Gastineau Channel is still a little slow with the latest sample information of an average weight of 9.2 pounds and a sex ratio of 66% male and 34% female. The age comp was 2% 6 year olds, 53% 5 year olds, 42% 4 year olds and 3% 3 year olds. We have harvested ~4.4 million pounds to date - (7/12/2010).

July 6 – Commercial catches of chums sound about average for Lynn Canal and a little below average for Taku Inlet for the third gillnet fishing period of the season(check out the 2010 harvest graphs). Sample information from the third fishing period for Lynn Canal shows an average weight of 8.7 pounds and a sex ratio of 74% male and 26% female. The age comp was 3% 6 year olds, 30% 5 year olds, 62% 4 year olds and 4% 3 year olds. Sample information for Taku Inlet shows an average weight of 8.9 pounds and a sex ratio of 68% male and 32% female. The age comp was 2% 6 year olds, 53% 5 year olds, 42% 4 year olds and 3% 3 year olds.

Cost recovery at Amalga Harbor appears to be going well with good harvest numbers the last couple of days. Sample information for Amalga today was an average weight of 8.0 pounds and a sex ratio of 50% male and 50% female. The age comp was 5% 6 year olds, 39% 5 year olds, 53% 4 year olds and 3% 3 year olds. Cost recovery in Gastineau Channel is slow to start with the latest sample information of an average weight of 9.2 pounds and a sex ratio of 66% male and 34% female. The age comp was 2% 6 year olds, 53% 5 year olds, 42% 4 year olds and 3% 3 year olds. We have harvested ~1.5 million pounds to date - (7/5/2010).

July 1 – Commercial catches of chums are above average for Lynn Canal and below average for Taku Inlet for the second gillnet fishing period of the season(check out the 2010 harvest graphs). Sample information from the second fishing period for Lynn Canal shows an average weight of 8.2 pounds and a sex ratio of 88% male and 12% female. The age comp was 0% 6 year olds, 40% 5 year olds, 56% 4 year olds and 4% 3 year olds. Sample information for Taku Inlet shows an average weight of 8.9 pounds and a sex ratio of 71% male and 29% female. The age comp was 3% 6 year olds, 50% 5 year olds, 45% 4 year olds and 2% 3 year olds.

Cost recovery at Amalga Harbor appears average after 2 days of fishing. Sample information for Amalga yesterday was an average weight of 8.7 pounds and a sex ratio of 81% male and 19% female. The age comp was 1% 6 year olds, 43% 5 year olds, 55% 4 year olds and 1% 3 year olds. We will start chum cost recovery in Gastineau Channel tomorrow the 2nd of July.

June 28 – Commercial catches of chums sound a little slow in both Lynn Canal and Taku Inlet at the beginning of the second gillnet fishing period of the season. Sample information from the first fishing period for Lynn Canal shows an average weight of 9.7 pounds and a sex ratio of 83% male and 17% female. The age comp was 5% 6 year olds, 60% 5 year olds, 35% 4 year olds and 0% 3 year olds. Sample information for Taku Inlet shows an average weight of 10.3 pounds and a sex ratio of 90% male and 10% female. The age comp was 16% 6 year olds, 63% 5 year olds, 21% 4 year olds and 0% 3 year olds. Some of the troll fleet have been targeting chum out in district 14 on the Home Shore with 74% of the catch being DIPAC produced chums. We are planning to start chum cost recovery at Amalga Harbor tomorrow and Friday in Gastineau Channel.

June 24 – Commercial catches of chums sound a little slow in both Lynn Canal and Taku Inlet for the first gillnet fishing period of the season. The chum appear large and it looks like it is very early in the run. Sample information for Lynn Canal shows an average weight of 9.7 pounds and a sex ratio of 83% male and 17% female. The age comp was 5% 6 year olds, 60% 5 year olds, 35% 4 year olds and 0% 3 year olds. Sample information for Taku Inlet shows an average weight of 10.3 pounds and a sex ratio of 90% male and 10% female. The age comp was 16% 6 year olds, 63% 5 year olds, 21% 4 year olds and 0% 3 year olds. Some of the troll fleet have been targeting chum out in district 14 on the Home Shore with 76% of the catch being DIPAC produced chums. We are planning to start chum cost recovery at Amalga Harbor on the 29th of June and possible on the 2nd of July in Gastineau Channel.
