2008 DIPAC Harvest Season Update

August 18 – For stat week 33 the catches of chums and sockeye are very slow in both dist 11 & 15. It also appears DIPAC's cost recovery is over at both Amalga Harbor and Gastineau Channel. Total combined cost recovery catch was 1,556,000 chums. The last sample information for Amalga Harbor was an average weight of 6.7 pounds and a sex ratio of 27% male and 73% female. The age comp was 2% - 6 year olds, 7% - 5 year olds, 83% - 4 year olds and 8% - 3 year olds. Sample information for Gastineau Channel had an average of 8.1 pounds and a sex ratio of 42% male and 58% female. The age comp was 0% - 6 year olds, 13% - 5 year olds, 85% - 4 year olds and 2% - 3 year olds. Snettisham cost recovery is still very slow with 22,000 sockeye harvested as of 8/17/2008. The last sample information was an average weight of 5.3 pounds and a sex ratio of 50% male and 50% female. The age comp was 25% - 5 year olds and 75% - 4 year olds.

The Crescent Lake sonar system was installed and operational on July 10th and the Speel Lake weir was installed and operational on July 15th. Crescent Lake has counted a total of 1,154 fish into the lake and they have passed 1,128 sockeye into Speel Lake as of August 17th. For the date these are very low numbers at both lakes.

Macaulay Salmon Hatchery chum eggtake started on 7/25/2008. The eggtake is going well with over 111 million eggs taken to date.

August 14 – For stat week 33 the catches of chums and sockeye are very slow in both dist 11 & 15. It also appears DIPAC's cost recovery is over at both Amalga Harbor and Gastineau Channel. Total combined cost recovery catch was 1,556,000 chums. The last sample information for Amalga Harbor was an average weight of 6.7 pounds and a sex ratio of 27% male and 73% female. The age comp was 2% - 6 year olds, 7% - 5 year olds, 83% - 4 year olds and 8% - 3 year olds. Sample information for Gastineau Channel had an average of 8.1 pounds and a sex ratio of 42% male and 58% female. The age comp was 0% - 6 year olds, 13% - 5 year olds, 85% - 4 year olds and 2% - 3 year olds.

Snettisham cost recovery is still very slow with 16,000 sockeye harvested as of 8/13/2008. The last sample information was an average weight of 5.2 pounds and a sex ratio of 60% male and 40% female. The age comp was 16% - 5 year olds and 84% - 4 year olds.

The Crescent Lake sonar system was installed and operational on July 10th and the Speel Lake weir was installed and operational on July 15th. Crescent Lake has counted a total of 1,039 fish into the lake and they have passed 1,118 sockeye into Speel Lake as of August 13th. For the date these are very low numbers at both lakes.

Macaulay Salmon Hatchery chum eggtake started on 7/25/2008. The eggtake is going well with over 96 million eggs taken to date.

Total combined cost recovery catch was 1,556,000 chums. The last sample information for Amalga Harbor was an average weight of 6.7 pounds and a sex ratio of 27% male and 73% female. The age comp was 2% - 6 year olds, 7% - 5 year olds, 83% - 4 year olds and 8% - 3 year olds. Sample information for Gastineau Channel had an average of 8.1 pounds and a sex ratio of 42% male and 58% female. The age comp was 0% - 6 year olds, 13% - 5 year olds, 85% - 4 year olds and 2% - 3 year olds.

Snettisham cost recovery is starting off very slow with 13,000 sockeye harvested as of 8/10/2008. The last sample information was an average weight of 5.2 pounds and a sex ratio of 60% male and 40% female. The age comp was 16% - 5 year olds and 84% - 4 year olds.

The Crescent Lake sonar system was installed and operational on July 10th and the Speel Lake weir was installed and operational on July 15th. Crescent Lake has counted a total of 950 fish into the lake and they have passed 1,005 sockeye into Speel Lake as of August 10th. For the date these are very low numbers at both lakes.

August 7 – For stat week 32 the catches of chums are nearly over in both dist 11 & 15. It also appears DIPAC's cost recovery is over at both Amalga Harbor and Gastineau Channel. Total combined cost recovery catch was 1,556,000 chums. The last sample information for Amalga Harbor was an average weight of 6.7 pounds and a sex ratio of 27% male and 73% female. The age comp was 2% - 6 year olds, 7% - 5 year olds, 83% - 4 year olds and 8% - 3 year olds. Sample information for Gastineau Channel had an average of 8.1 pounds and a sex ratio of 42% male and 58% female. August 4 – For stat week 31 the catches of chums have gone way down for both dist 11 & 15. It also appears DIPAC's cost recovery is near the end at both Amalga Harbor and Gastineau Channel. Total combined cost recovery catch through yesterday (8/3/2008) was 1,520,000 chums. The latest sample information for Amalga Harbor was an average weight of 7.0 pounds and a sex ratio of 28% male and 72% female. The age comp was 2% - 6 year olds, 10% - 5 year olds, 80% - 4 year olds and 8% - 3 year olds. Sample information for Gastineau Channel had an average of 8.1 pounds and a sex ratio of 42% male and 58% female. The age comp was 0% - 6 year olds, 13% - 5 year olds, 85% - 4 year olds and 2% - 3 year olds.

The Crescent Lake sonar system was installed and operational on July 10th and the Speel Lake weir was installed and operational on July 15th. Crescent Lake has counted a total of 779 fish into the lake and they have passed 202 sockeye into Speel Lake as of August 3rd.

August 1 – For stat week 31 the catches of chums have gone way down for both dist 11 & 15. It also appears DIPAC's cost recovery is near the end at both Amalga Harbor and Gastineau Channel. Total combined cost recovery catch through yesterday (7/31/2008) was 1,460,000 chums. The latest sample information for Amalga Harbor was an average weight of 7.0 pounds and a sex ratio of 28% male and 72% female. The age comp was 2% - 6 year olds, 10% - 5 year olds, 80% - 4 year olds and 8% - 3 year olds. Sample information for Gastineau Channel had an average of 7.9 pounds and a sex ratio of 26% male and 74% female. The age comp was 2% - 6 year olds, 12% - 5 year olds, 85% - 4 year olds and 2% - 3 year olds.

Snettisham cost recovery is scheduled to start today, with only few fish seen around the hatchery so far.

The Crescent Lake sonar system was installed and operational on July 10th and the Speel Lake weir was installed and operational on July 15th. Crescent Lake has counted a total of 516 fish into the lake and they have passed 127 sockeye into Speel Lake as of July 31th.

Macaulay Salmon Hatchery chum eggtake started on 7/25/2008. The eggtake is going well with over 32 million eggs taken to date.

July 28 – For stat week 30 the catches of chums have slowed down for both dist 11 & 15. It appears DIPAC's cost recovery is well pasted the peak at both Amalga Harbor and Gastineau Channel. The cost recovery should continue through the end of the month but again is looking very slow. Total combined cost recovery catch through yesterday (7/27/2008) was 1,350,000 chums. The latest sample information for Amalga Harbor was an average weight of 7.0 pounds and a sex ratio of 28% male and 72% female. The age comp was 2% - 6 year olds, 10% - 5 year olds, 80% - 4 year olds and 8% - 3 year olds. Sample information for Gastineau Channel had an average of 7.7 pounds and a sex ratio of 32% male and 68% female. The age comp was 2% - 6 year olds, 11% - 5 year olds, 86% - 4 year olds and 2% - 3 year olds.

Snettisham cost recovery is scheduled to start on July 30th, with very few fish seen around the hatchery so far.

July 24 – For stat week 30 fair catches were reported for both dist 11 & 15 but the fishery is slowing down. It appears DIPAC's cost recovery is past the peak at both Amalga Harbor and Gastineau Channel. the cost recovery should continue through the end of the month. Total combined cost recovery catch through yesterday (7/23/2008) was 1,250,000 chums. The latest sample information for Amalga Harbor was an average weight of 7.9 pounds and a sex ratio of 34% male and 66% female. The age comp was 1% 6 year olds, 12% 5 year olds, 83% 4 year olds and 4% 3 year olds. Sample information for Gastineau Channel had an average of 8.3 pounds and a sex ratio of 46% male and 54% female. The age comp was 1% 6 year olds, 19% 5 year olds, 80% 4 year olds and 0% 3 year olds.

The Crescent Lake sonar system was installed and operational on July 10th and the Speel Lake weir was installed and operational on July 15th. Crescent Lake has counted a total of 200 fish into the lake and they have passed 30 sockeye into Speel Lake as of July 23rd.

July 21 – For stat week 29 good catches were reported for both dist 11 & 15. DIPAC's cost recovery is going well at Amalga Harbor but somewhat slow in Gastineau Channel. Total combined cost recovery catch through yesterday (7/20/2008) was 1,080,000 chums. The latest sample information for Amalga Harbor was an averaged 8.1 pounds and a sex ratio of 42% male and 58% female. The age comp was 0% 6 year olds, 15% 5 year olds, 81% 4 year olds and 5% 3 year olds. Sample information for Gastineau Channel was an averaged 8.3 pounds and a sex ratio of 46% male and 54% female. The age comp was 1% 6 year olds, 19% 5 year olds, 80% 4 year olds and 0% 3 year olds.

The Crescent Lake sonar system was installed and operational on July 10th and the Speel Lake weir was installed and operational on July 15th. Crescent Lake has counted a total of 103 fish into the lake and they have passed 8 sockeye into Speel Lake as of July 20th.

July 16 – Information for stat week 29 indicates both dist 11 & 15 had very good catches of chums again for the week. DIPAC's cost recovery is going well at Amalga Harbor but somewhat slow in Gastineau Channel. Total combined cost recovery catch through yesterday (7/15/2008) was 753,000 chums. Sample information for Amalga Harbor was an averaged 8.0 pounds and a sex ratio of 43% male and 57% female. The age comp was 1% 6 year olds, 15% 5 year olds, 83% 4 year olds and 1% 3 year olds. Sample information for Gastineau Channel was an averaged 8.7 pounds and a sex ratio of 52% male and 48% female. The age comp was 1% 6 year olds, 30% 5 year olds, 67% 4 year olds and 2% 3 year olds.

July 10 – Information for stat week 28 indicates both dist 11 & 15 had very large catches of chums for the week. DIPAC's cost recovery is going well at Amalga Harbor but somewhat slow in Gastineau Channel. Total combined cost recovery catch through yesterday (7/9/2008) was 415,000 chums. Sample information for Amalga Harbor was an averaged 8.9 pounds and a sex ratio of 50% male and 50% female. The age comp was 2% 6 year olds, 24% 5 year olds, 71% 4 year olds and 3% 3 year olds. Sample information for Gastineau Channel was an averaged 9.0 pounds and a sex ratio of 63% male and 37% female. The age comp was 1% 6 year olds, 30% 5 year olds, 67% 4 year olds and 2% 3 year olds.

July 7 – Information for stat week 27 indicated both dist 11 & 15 had good catches of chums for the week. DIPAC's cost recovery is going well at both Amalga Harbor and Gastineau Channel. Total combined cost recovery catch through yesterday was 219,000 chums. Sample information for Amalga Harbor was an averaged 9.1 pounds and a sex ratio of 50% male and 50% female. The age comp was 2% 6 year olds, 24% 5 year olds, 71% 4 year olds and 3% 3 year olds. Sample information for Gastineau Channel was an averaged 9.6 pounds and a sex ratio of 65% male and 35% female. The age comp was 3% 6 year olds, 48% 5 year olds, 49% 4 year olds and 0% 3 year olds.

July 3 – Information for stat week 27 indicates both dist 11 & 15 had good catches of chums for the week. DIPAC's cost recovery is going well at both Amalga Harbor and Gastineau Channel. Total combined cost recovery catch through yesterday was 72,000 chums. Sample information for Amalga was an averaged 8.7 pounds and a sex ratio of 68% male and 32% female. The age comp was 2% 6 year olds, 31% 5 year olds, 65% 4 year olds and 2% 3 year olds. Sample information for Gastineau Channel was an averaged 9.8 pounds and a sex ratio of 63% male and 37% female. The age comp was 2% 6 year olds, 51% 5 year olds, 47% 4 year olds and 0% 3 year olds.

July 1 – DIPAC cost recovery started yesterday at both Amalga Harbor and Gastineau Channel. The chum catch for both areas was 31,000 for the day and was within the expected catch range. Sample information for Amalga was an averaged 8.7 pounds and a sex ratio of 68% male and 32% female. The age comp was 2% 6 year olds, 31% 5 year olds, 65% 4 year olds and 2% 3 year olds. Sample information for Gastineau Channel was an averaged 9.8 pounds and a sex ratio of 63% male and 37% female. The age comp was 2% 6 year olds, 51% 5 year olds, 47% 4 year olds and 0% 3 year olds.

June 26 – The second gillent fishing period occurred this week and again showed moderate catches of DIPAC chums in both Dist 11 & 15. Sample information from Lynn Canal showed DIPAC chums averaged 9.6 pounds and a sex ratio of 74% male and 26% female. The age comp was 2% 6 year olds, 47% 5 year olds and 51% 4 year olds. DIPAC's chum cost recovery should start by the end of June at Amalga and early July in Gastineau Channel.

June 19 – The first gillent fishing period from June 15 - 17 showed moderate catches of DIPAC chums in both Dist 11 & 15. The chums were mostly 5 year olds and averaged over 10 pounds. DIPAC's chum cost recovery should start by the end of June.

June 5 – Chum cost recovery should start around the 27th of June. Updates will be made as more information is available.
